Broker's Comments

The Shogun 50 is a real breath of fresh air – from the keel upwards.

Designed for performance yet comfortable, displacement is less than a metric ton more than a TP52, and half a metric ton lighter than a Club Swan 50, yet she has teak decks, a full interior, lifting keel and comfortable cockpit space. They are cleverly designed inside and outside to make the most of the space ergonomically and with the weight in mind.

The twin rudders and wheel steering make sailing simple and easy to push hard in complete control. She has striking bow rails, which also work very well in keeping the water away from the deck and tumbling into the cockpit, for a dry and comfortable ride.

Of course, she could not be such a performer without being constructed in carbon, and she has plenty of it in all the right places.

A carbon rig, and also carbon standing rigging, keeps the righting moment high and displacement low. Righting moment is always discussed in racing terms and the positive effect on power and performance, but rarely referenced to the positive benefits to cruising. Lower pitch and roll at anchor and reefing later are the main benefits – also, as long as the maintenance and inspection schedules are adhered to, it will last significantly longer than the rod or wire equivalent.

The keel is also beautifully designed and built to enable the yacht to sail in shallow waters, for a sporty 3.3m to a usable 2m.

Weight in the keel is as far down as possible, as the fin is constructed in carbon, and a staggering 45% of the weight of the entire yacht is in the keel bulb, which is almost unheard of in a cruising yacht.

She really is a sailor’s dream, a fire breathing sports car that is equally at home on the supermarket run. Think Audi RS6.
