Sparkman & Stephens 40 #1767, GRY is an exquisitely built but sturdy all-weather sloop that sails beautifully. Her comfortable and spacious interior with good standing height would make her ideal for a small family.

The Sparkman & Stephens 40 is an iconic classic fiberglass yacht with Mahogany and Oregon Pine throughout, lending her an elegant, timeless look. She sports the classic look of a wooden yacht, whilst enjoying the modern benefits of a GRP hull. When GRY was built, GRP was a relatively new construction material for the boatbuilding industry and the shipyards were therefore generous when laminating the hulls. Below the waterline GRY has a modified full keel with a keel-hung rudder. This combination is still favoured by many short-handed, long-range offshore sailors. It is rock-solid, reliable and gives the yacht a comfortable, easy motion in rough seas.

Weighing 8,500kg, GRY´s sturdiness is evident. 4,300kg of her weight apportioned to ballast means she has a great righting moment and the relation between the sail plan, displacement and ballast is excellent. The yachts from Sparkman & Stephens of this era are also known for their good performance up-wind, particularly in a blow.

GRY was built 1965 by the Teksoglass shipyard in Hämeenlinna, Finland and she was the 2nd out of the 10 built Sparkman & Stephens 40 #1767 built. The model was designed by Olin Stephens and was adapted to the British R.O.R.C. rating rule. The first owner of GRY was the Chief Surveyor at Lloyd’s, Åke Lindqvist. He was one of the driving forces behind this model. Åke was very much into offshore racing and had established contacts with Sparkman & Stephens. He had, like Olin Stephens, a good knowledge for performing calculations for yachts. Together they could analyze the rating rules to find out what design measures were worth going forward with, to achieve a favorable rating.

In 1967, A few years after GRY was launched, Nautor started their production of Swan yachts. Sparkman & Stephens was the designer of their first model, the Swan 36 and later the Swan 40. Those two designs share many of the characteristics of the Sparkman & Stephens 40, one differentiation being Swan´s split-lateral plane compared to the modified full keel.

GRY was originally named EVA II, and later SCHALU and SPARK. She has been owned by famous Olympic sailors, Whitbread sailors and Swedish actors among others, each with their own special story of their time sailing GRY.

Between 1989-1996 she underwent a serious refit both above and below deck. Najadvarvet AB gave her a new teak deck and her carpentry was replaced and varnished. She also received a new, taller mast from Seldén.

GRY underwent another extensive refit and upgrade by her current owner between 2020-2023, with and investment of more than €100,000. Everything from instrumentation and engine to standing rigging, sails and gelcoat has all been replaced, serviced and polished and she now gleams.

GRY is fitted with an electric engine from GSM Electric which makes her ready for a new emission free world. On deck there is space to fit additional solar panels if you wish.

GRY’s warm, safe centre cockpit centrally seats six people comfortably. A new Raymarine chart plotter is mounted on the pedestal and new instrumentation is mounted around the steering wheel and above the companionway. Sailing this boat is like a dream. She is effortless to sail single-handed, and she handles all weathers with ease.

Below the deck you will find a well-equipped galley with plenty of stowage. The nav station to starboard also has plenty of smart draws and a wide berth stretches aft. There is spacious, longitudinal saloon with folding table and sofas that can cleverly be transformed into extra berths. Beyond the forward head is a corridor with wardrobes and forepeak cabin for 2 guests. There is plenty of stowage throughout the yacht.

This yacht is a must see for the true sailor who appreciates both performance and beautiful classic design!

Owner’s Comments

We saw a gem in GRY, a solid base that needed some love and attention. She has been a love affair for four years and we’re so proud to see the result of her refit, with many different experts contributing to her refurbishment. Everyone involved in her restoration project have tended to GRY with love, care and affection. A new owner will take on a beautiful yacht that sails like a dream and turns heads in every anchorage.
